Lillig Family in the 1940 Census

The 1940 US Census has just been released. This gives us a little snapshot of the country and individual households the first week of April, 1940. By this time the only child at home was Frances (Aunt Tootsie).

The ages are:
Kless 71
Elizabeth 64
Frances 24

Kless is retired. Toots is working as a clerk at the county physicians office.

The house at 1211 Lowell in Kansas City, Kansas was owned and valued at $2500.

Kless is shown as having completed the 7th grade, Lizzie completed the 4th grade, and Toots finished high school.

From Zillow I found the house was built in 1891, has 1192 square feet, 3 bedrooms, and 2 baths.

Here is the house as it appears today. Click on the navigation tool in the upper left hand corner to view to the left and right and even across the street.

Altar boy Fred

This is a great photograph of Uncle Fred. You can almost see little wings attached to his back.

Cecilia and Fred

Cecilia Lillig on the left and younger brother Fred. This was no doubt taken at the same time as the previous photograph in 1913.

Three Generations

This is sometime in 1913. The women are left to right: Aunt Tillie Pittrich, Grandma Lizzie Lillig nee Pittrich, their mother Johanna Pittrich nee Braun. The children are Cecilia and Fred Lillig. Three generations in this photograph and their lifetimes span from 1841 to 1998. This would have been a reunion of sorts as Lizzie and Tillie were both living in Kansas City for several years by this time and their mother lived out her life in Lohman, Missouri. Johanna passed away less than two years later on January 1, 1915.

Kless Lillig

Kless Lillig later in life, probably in the 1930s.
